  1. On Living Fully

  1. On Fear of Failure

The hardest part about ascending in life is the immediate step down you’re forced to take as “entry to the game”. Leaving your cozy job to start the business. Starting conversations with strangers to build confidence then getting rejected. Entering the gym for the first time and lifting the “small weights”. The weakness was always there, but you organised your life around avoiding it—keeping yourself safe but also stuck living out a fraction of your potential. The path of ascension starts with running towards this pain. Choosing the short term step down for the long term ascent upwards.

  1. On Changing The Past

“So many of the best things in your life today only exist as a result of what you previously thought were the worst things in your life

There's a reality where you didn't lose that money, that job, that whatever. But you did. And it made you think your life was over

You thinking your life was over made you fight for your survival. It forced you to try to start your own business, something you wouldn't have had the balls to do prior. It forced you to send out hundreds of DM's to people you wouldn't have had the interest to even consider before. It forced you to stop being afraid of failure, when you used to believe you had something to lose

Endless ways to make sense of your story in hindsight. But that loss of comfort and feeling of safety is exactly what opened up an entirely new set of doors for you that you never had a reason to walk through until a year ago, last month, yesterday

Don't make the mistake of thinking you're smarter than you actually are. By design, you're not intelligent enough to know what's good or bad for you. All you can do is see every event as an objective experience, stay endlessly curious about how things might make sense one day, and have faith that they will”

  1. On Being “About It”

  1. On Burning The Boats

Many centuries ago, Roman soldiers attempted to invade the island of England by attacking the cliffs of Dover. Just across the English Channel from France, the cliffs served as a close entry point for invading soldiers. But they were not easy to climb and overtake, especially when they were being defended. For years, the Romans tried to take the cliffs, failing and retreating each time. They would get into their rowboats, which they launched from their ships, row to shore, try to scale the cliffs, and then return to their ships, time and time again. Finally, a Roman captain made a decision. He ordered that on the next attempt, the rowboats be burned on shore so there would be no means of retreat for the soldiers. They would either succeed in taking the cliffs or they would perish. With no option of failure, they finally took the cliffs.

  1. On The Gift of Life

Take a second; close your eyes, imagine you’re old & at the end of your life, looking back at the full picture, knowing that it’s now over. Really imagine it. Think about how it’s gonna feel to know all the things you’ll never do again. To look back and evaluate your own performance. To sift through the pile of regrets and “should’ve’s”. Think about how you’ll wish you lived. Now live that way.

  1. On You vs. You

  1. On Reminders

These were Patrick Bet David’s “Daily Reminders” when he was struggling on the come up:

Oftentimes we need reminding of things we already know more than we need to learn something new. Having a list like this is a shortcut you can use to remember who you are, and why you’re doing what you’re doing when negativity/fear inevitably strikes.
